Compress Images
How to compress a photo without uploading it
- Drop JPEG, PNG, WebP, or HEIC — one file or a whole pile. Paste works too.
- Quality defaults to 76. Long edge defaults to 1920 — enough for a phone screen.
- Pick WebP if you want it smaller. Pick JPEG if the other person needs a boring file.
- Optional: cap the file at 200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB, or 2 MB.
- Download the smaller copies, or a zip if you dropped more than one. Close the tab and they are gone.
This is a canvas re-encode in your browser. Same idea as removing photo metadata, plus quality and resize. Want the scare first? see if GPS is still in the file.
Why shrink it here
Camera-roll originals are huge. An iPhone HEIC can be several megabytes. Email, marketplace listings, and “attach a photo” forms choke on that. Most online compressors take a copy of the file. This one does not. Drop a whole camera-roll dump if you want — same settings for every file, then a zip. Compression runs in this tab with the File and Canvas APIs. After one visit it works offline.
Re-saving also washes EXIF. GPS, camera model, and timestamps do not survive a canvas export. If you only need the tags gone and the same pixel count, use Remove Photo Metadata instead.
Longer versions: compress without uploading, JPEG vs WebP, does compressing remove GPS. iPhone HEIC and you only need a JPEG that opens? HEIC to JPG — original pixels, no resize. Need a different box, not a smaller file? Convert images — WebP, PNG, AVIF, HEIC, or a pile into one PDF.
Image compressor FAQ
Do my photos get uploaded?
No. Compression runs in this tab with the File and Canvas APIs. TrashPandaKit never receives the file.
What formats can I compress?
JPEG, PNG, WebP, and iPhone HEIC / HEIF. The download is JPEG or WebP. HEIC becomes one of those so other apps can open it.
Does compressing a photo remove GPS and EXIF?
Yes. Re-encoding through canvas writes a new file without GPS, camera model, timestamps, or embedded thumbnails. If you only want tags gone and the same pixels, use Remove Photo Metadata.
JPEG or WebP — which should I pick?
WebP is usually smaller at the same look. JPEG is the safer send if the other person might open it in an old app or email client. Try both on one photo if it matters.
What does long edge mean?
The longer side of the photo, in pixels. 1920 is plenty for phones and most websites. Original keeps the pixel count and only changes quality and format.
What does the size cap do?
It aims at a maximum file size (200 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB, 2 MB) by lowering quality, then shrinking pixels if needed. Useful for email attachments and listing uploads.
Can I compress more than one photo at a time?
Yes. Drop a pile. The same quality, format, long edge, and size cap apply to every file. When more than one is done, download a zip.
Does this work offline?
Yes, after you have opened this tool once. That tool stays cached on this device. Other tools download when you open them.
