How to test your webcam and microphone

  1. Click Start camera & microphone.
  2. Allow camera and mic when the browser asks.
  3. You should see a live webcam preview. Speak — the microphone meter should move.
  4. Optional: tap Test speakers to hear a bell, or tap the red circle to record three seconds of microphone audio, then the green triangle to play the wave back.
  5. Click Stop. The tracks end. Close the tab and the preview is gone.

This is the same getUserMedia path Google Meet, Zoom in the browser, and Teams use. If it works here, the hardware is not the problem — the meeting app is.

Why your camera or microphone is not working

The usual pile: the lock icon blocked this site, another call still owns the device, or the OS denied Chrome / Safari / Edge. On a Mac, check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and Microphone. On Windows, Settings → Privacy & security. On iPhone, Settings → Safari (or Chrome) → Camera / Microphone.

A black preview with a live badge often means the wrong camera is selected — switch devices in the list. A still meter usually means the wrong microphone, or input muted at the OS level.

Is a webcam test private?

Most “webcam test” pages feel like spyware. This one is a static page. The stream is painted in this tab. We do not upload video, audio, or device names. The optional 3-second clip is a local blob. That is the whole product.

Camera and mic are not in the automatic leak list — those need a click. See what websites know without asking. Photos are a different leak: check GPS in a file, then strip it.

Longer versions: test before a call, webcam not working, is an online webcam test safe.

Webcam test FAQ

How do I test my webcam?

Click Start camera & microphone, then Allow when the browser asks. A live preview should appear. If it stays black, another app may have the camera, or the wrong device is selected.

How do I test my microphone?

Allow the microphone, then speak. The live wave should move. Tap the red circle to record three seconds of sound only — not the camera — then the green triangle to play it back. If the wave stays still, check the selected input and the address-bar permission.

Is this webcam test safe? Do you record me?

The preview and mic meter run in this tab with the same getUserMedia API video calls use. We do not record unless you tap the red circle, and that clip is microphone audio only. It never leaves the tab. Close the page and it is gone.

Why is my camera or mic not working?

Usual causes: the site is blocked in the lock icon, Zoom/Meet/Teams still holds the device, macOS or Windows privacy settings deny the browser, or the wrong camera/mic is selected. This page prints a specific error when it can.

Does a webcam test work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge on phones and computers. On iPhone, allow Camera and Microphone for the browser in Settings if the prompt never appears.

Can I test speakers too?

Yes. Test speakers plays a short bell. On Chromium you can pick an output device. Playback of a 3-second mic recording is another check that headphones are the active output.

Does this work offline?

Yes, after you have opened this tool once. That tool stays cached on this device. Other tools download when you open them.
