WhatsApp, Mail, or iMessage already sent a mushy copy. That file cannot be repaired. JPEG threw the detail away. A “decompress” site, a 4K enhancer, or JPEG-to-HEIC will not put it back.
The useful move is to find the camera original and send that — or accept the small one.
1. Open Photos, not the chat
The picture in the thread is a new JPEG the app wrote for speed. The picture in Photos is often still the camera file.
If you only saved the download from the chat, that is all you have. Stop. Do not pay to “restore” it.
If the original is still in the roll: send that file. AirDrop, email attachment, USB, or WhatsApp Document — not another photo bubble.
2. WhatsApp: Document, not HD
Default photo send is a small re-save. Long edge is capped on purpose.
HD is sharper. It is still a re-encoded JPEG, still not the camera file. The badge in the photo picker is that toggle — ticked HD is not the camera original.

WhatsApp’s own HD photos help: you cannot upgrade a photo already in the thread. You can send it again in HD from the roll.
Document is the original bytes. Chat → + / paperclip → Document → pick the photo (on iPhone, save it to Files first). They download a file, not an inline preview. WhatsApp’s send media / document path, 2 GB cap. That is how you stop the crush.
3. Check GPS before you attach the original
The mushy WhatsApp send is usually washed of location. The camera original often still has a pin. Document send keeps that bag.
Drop the file on Photo Location. Pin or no pin is the answer. Need it clean and full size? Strip metadata in this tab, then attach that copy. Nothing is uploaded.
Which share path washes tags: Instagram, WhatsApp, Slack, email.
4. HEIC is a format problem, not a quality upgrade
iPhone High Efficiency writes HEIC. Most Compatible writes JPEG. That switch only changes new shots. It does not un-crush a WhatsApp JPEG.
If the other computer wants a JPEG, run HEIC to JPG here. Same pixels in a box Windows can open. Converting JPEG back to HEIC does nothing.
iCloud “Optimize iPhone Storage” can leave a smaller local preview. Download original / AirDrop from Photos first if the full file is in the cloud.
5. Shrink only when the file is too fat
Email caps. A listing form. A pile of 12-megapixel stills. Then compress in this tab — quality and long-edge on purpose, no upload. How that works: compress images without uploading.
Do not compress a WhatsApp download. You only make the mush smaller.
Do this once
- Find the shot in Photos, not in the chat.
- Drop it on Photo Location. Strip if you do not want the pin.
- If they need JPEG: HEIC to JPG. If they need it under a size cap: compress.
- Send as a document (or AirDrop / email). Not as a photo in the bubble.
